Issues with Office 2003 Outlook Hotfix and CRM SFO Client

Microsoft has confirmed there is an issue with a new Outlook hotfix released Tuesday (KB924085), that will cause Outlook to crash if you have the CRM Sales for Outlook client installed.  They are working on a fix for the CRM client now, but the current workaround is to uninstall the hotfix.  It only affects Office 2003, with the CRM Sales for Outlook client installed.  If you are using Office 2007, you should not be affected.

Application Event log shows:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: Microsoft Office 11

Event ID: 1000

Date:  1/10/2007

User:  N/A

Computer: STOCKBRIDGE

Description:

Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.8118.0, stamp 456628bf, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0xffffffff.

 

 

Current Workaround:  Uninstall hotfix KB924085

 

Microsoft is working on a hotfix for the CRM desktop and laptop clients.  It is a high priority hotfix, so the turnaround time should be short.

You certainly seem to be on to the source of this issue.  Could you provide a URL or cite where you found Microsoft confirming the issue with hotfix KB924085?

I can confirm that the issue happens with Outlook 2003 and the hotfix and CRM light client combination.

Hi Yukio.  I came to this information from the Microsoft team in Fargo, ND.  I was working on a case unrelated to this, when my customer starting having this issue.  The person I was working with from the Fargo team alerted me of this issue at the time.

Microsoft is working on finalizing the docuemnt, and should have a KB publicly available over the next couple days.  I will update this when it becomes available.

Hi Ted.  Thanks for your reply.  I'll have to keep my eye out for the KB to become available.

The workaround has resolved the issue for my site.  No more problem reports of Outlook crashing many, many times per day.

Yukio - Microsoft has released the KB with regards to the CRM patches that help with this issue.

Note - You still need to contact Product Support for this issue.  There are two patches - one for the server and one for the client.  Another thing to note - if you are using the v3c client with Outlook 2003, I'm not sure if this patch is the right one.  I need to verify that, and will post again when I find that out.

Ralph - not sure what you are referring to not working.  But note that by now, the V3C client has been out for quite some time, as well as Rollup 2 and 3 for CRM 3.0 (and, of course, CRM 4.0).

If you are still having issues with Outlook crashing after any or all of these patches, there could be some other underlying issue.  Now - it's been a few months since your post - sorry for the delay.  If you are still having issues, I would recommend contacting Microsoft Product Support - or you can contact us for assistance.
