· Outlook loads much faster – you don’t have to wait for the CRM toolbar to load before you can get to your email. You no longer see the load status for the CRM toolbar – don’t panic, it’s still working

· Synchronization and email tagging runs as a background process, which should improve performance considerably for those of us with larger mailboxes

· Improved ability to manage state changes in the Outlook add-on, which should prevent the need to restart Outlook so often (I still do, but that’s just me)

· If you are a delegate for another user, you can now track items in their mailbox and the records will be attached to the correct owner

As with any Update Rollup for CRM:

· It is cumulative, so you don’t have to apply 1-6 first

· There are updates for the CRM server, Email Router, SRS Data Connector, Outlook Add-in, and MUI (There doesn’t seem to be an update for the Data Migration Manager this time around)

· You do not need to apply all of these fixes at the same time. You can take your time to test the server fixes, and roll out the client fix sooner – or vice-versa

· You will definitely want to test this update in a development environment that mirrors your Production environment

· Make sure to back up your CRM databases, and any custom code you may not have stored in the CRM database prior to applying the update. You can uninstall the server components if you need – but better safe than sorry

· There are several hotfixes included in the rollup that need to be manually configured. You can read about those in this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971782

There are a couple things I would like to touch on, with regards to this particular update rollup:

· The server update adds a button to the CRM web interface for installing CRM For Outlook. This is a pretty cool feature, and the client install code has UR7 slip-streamed in! Here is a pretty cool KB Microsoft put together, that spells out:

o How to create the configuration file to have the server reference when pointing users to the CRM client installation

o How to re-point this button to a share on your network, instead of pointing users to the internet – if you do this be sure to download the new code from Microsoft’s website, with UR7 slipstreamed in:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=60C4A6CC-59D7-416E-9F44-0AE8FF249768&displaylang=en

o How to disable the button all together: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2004601

· We’ve experienced issues after applying UR7 to the server, with editing columns in Advanced Find views – it seemed to break in Internet Explorer 7. We were able to resolve this by resetting IE settings to default. To do this in IE7:

o Click tools – Internet Options

o Click Advanced tab

o Under “reset Internet Explorer to default settings”, click reset

o Close IE and re-open when complete

· Some things to note about resetting your IE settings:

o You will lose anything custom you set if you do this

o You may not have the ability to do this yourself, if you have group policies that enforce security in IE. If that is the case, contact your Helpdesk for resolution

· Please note we did not experience this in IE8. We also have not yet tested this in IE6 to see how it behaves

· We’ve experienced issues after applying UR7 to the server, with Active X pages not being able to load

o If you see this, add the CRM URL to your Local Intranet Zone (On Premise) or Trusted Sites (IFD)

o You may still get a prompt asking if it’s secure to load the page

o If you disable the Outlook For CRM button, you will not see any of these prompts

· Note: the Outlook add-on update hotfix cannot be uninstalled. You’ll want to test in your environment before rolling it out to all users

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=970141

And download here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=5101d801-976b-4c11-bdfc-000b970ef4a3

As with all other rollups, this one is cumulative. That means you don't need to apply Update Rollup 1-4 first. So if you are at UR 2 or 3, or even RTM code, you can just apply these updates and you are - ummm - up to date!

Some things to note, just like with other rollups:

There are updates for the CRM Server, Email Router, SRS Data Connector, the CRM Outlook Add-in, the Data Migration Manager and MUI

You do not need to apply them all at the same time. This means you can apply the client rollup as you plan out your server update, etc

You will definitely want to test this update in a Development environment that mirrors your Production environment

Make sure you back up your CRM databases, and any custom code you may not have stored in the CRM database prior to applying the update. You can uninstall if you need - but it's still better safe than sorry

There are several hotfixes that need to be manually configured in the update. You can read about those in the KB article above

Update Rollup 5 is in line with Microsoft's plan to release cumulative updates for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 every 8 weeks or so. Since UR1, they have been on target for this. This affords IT departments to plan for and test the latest fixes for CRM, instead of just applying ad-hoc. If you do experience an issue that has not been addressed by a current fix, and it's determined you NEED a hotfix to resolve the issue, Microsoft will work to release something to you in between rollups. They still regression test these ad-hoc fixes before releasing them to customers in all but the most extreme of situations/issues. And most likely the fix will be included in the NEXT rollup for CRM.

Happy testing!

Car Wash....

Warning - Off topic...

Saturday was a BEAUTIFUL day in Minnesota! We had a warm day! Something we haven't experienced in - well a very long time.

Of course, on Saturday we Minnesotans ALL wanted to get our cars washed. I took the kids to the gas station, filled the tank, and bought the super duper scooper wash. We got in line, and were getting ready for the ride, when the guy before me put his window down and entered his digits in the carwash-enter-your-digits-here-to-enter-the-wash-thingie. He then proceeded to enter the car wash - sort of. He stopped mid-way, which had us wondering what was up. Did his car break down? Did he have second thoughts about having a clean car? He moved forward a little again, and then stopped. Again....

Then I saw him pounding on his window a bit. Was he mad at his car? Was he mad at the carwash, and felt he had to take it out on his car?

Turns out his window would not go back up! And he was about to enter a car wash! When he stepped out of his car to try and force the jammed window up, I stepped out of mine and offered to give him a hand - he could hit the button to try and put the window up (electric windows are cool, but not when they don't work and you are in a car wash), and I would try to force the jammed window up. Sounded like a good plan.

Until the door to the car wash went down on us, and the wash started! With us in it, but NOT in the car!!!

He jumped in the car, and I ran around to the passenger side. The door was locked! DUDE! DUDE! DOOOOOODDDDD!

I yelled that in a matter of seconds. He was already unlocking the door, as I threw my tantrum. I had this vision of being soaked by car wash water, and hot wax.

Course, when I went to get in, we both realized he had a bunch of stuff in the passenger seat, so I'm not getting in. Back to the shower, I guess.

Then he jumped out and found the emergency-shut-this-thing-off-NOW switch. Shower averted. Whew!

But - the doors weren't opening. We were stuck. And - I realized I left my car running outside. With my kids in it.......

No biggie. I'll call my daughter. She answered, laughing hysterically. She was quite disappointed to hear that I did not in fact get a personal car wash. But she was kind enough to get the guy to get us out of the car wash.

We parted ways, the poor guy with the window problems and I - and I got my car washed. And I even got another free one for my troubles! And some laughs and stories to tell.

So - what is this about CRM 4.0 having Rollup 2 released so soon (January 15th of this year)? And - didn't Rollup 1 JUST come out (November of last year)?

Yep - this was a pretty quick turnaround for a rollup. Microsoft has come up with a new strategy for releasing update rollups for its Dynamics CRM 4.0 On-premise product. The plan is to release a new update rollup every eight weeks. It's a pretty good thing, really, as you will have an easier way to plan for and deploy them to your environment.

For example - based on this timeframe, Update Rollup 3 should be available mid-March. Knowing this, you could plan to download and apply to your Dev environment around then. If all goes well, with a solid test plan, you could plan to have it rolled out to Production in a pretty timely fashion. I think this schedule would help insure your CRM system is up to date - something that might become difficult for a lot of customers to maintain today.

Note - Critical fixes will still be released in between the update rollup cycles, on an as-needed basis.

Read this post for some helpful information about the update rollup schedule.

Before I begin – DISCLAIMER – This is just me talking. I make no guarantees. I make no statements that are anything beyond my experience and opinion. But it just may prove helpful to you, if you were to stumble upon this post before another post that might be even more helpful.

o How does your computer perform? If your PC is sluggish, or tends to crash, the CRM client will probably not be stable. I recommend fixing the core issue, if this in fact it, before trying to troubleshoot CRM Client performance or stability issues.

o How does Outlook perform? The same recommendation goes for Outlook – if it crashed before the CRM client was introduced to the mix, it will probably crash after it’s installed as well. I would strongly recommend you start with an extremely stable Windows and Office environment.

o Have you met the minimum requirements for the CRM client? (software and hardware) – You can find them in the implementation Guide, downloadable here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1ceb5e01-de9f-48c0-8ce2-51633ebf4714&displaylang=en – page 3-30 of the Planning Guide has all the info you need.

I should point out that yes, the memory requirements are pretty high (1GB for a desktop/online client, 2GB for a laptop/offline client). Microsoft is trying to account for the fact that most people don’t JUST run Outlook and the CRM Client. They typically work in several other applications as well. While you “could” probably run these with less memory – I would recommend you look at these minimums as just that – MINIMUMS. “Less is more” does not apply here. If you can swing even more than the minimum, this is definitely a good idea. I realize there are limitations with what a 32 bit operating system can support. This will get better over time, as we all move to 64 bit operating systems (If we haven’t already).

o Have you applied the latest hot fixes (For Windows, Office, CRM)? For CRM Online (Or if you have deployed updates via the CRM Server for an On-Premise deployment), you can run the CRM update program on your PC – click Start-All Programs-Microsoft Dynamics CRM-Update. Then follow the wizard to download and install the latest fixes.

Also of note – since Update Rollup 1 is out for On-Premise deployments – you can get most of the updates for your client in one fell swoop. You CAN install the rollup for the client without installing it on the server or router, and vice-versa – so I would definitely recommend you at least look at deploying RU1 on your client PCs ASAP for your On-Premise deployments.

o Does your Office installation include Business Contact Manager? Running BCM and CRM at the same time can wreak havoc on your machine. This is supposed to be fixed in RU1 for On-Premise deployments, and via a new update for CRM Online deployments. You may however be better off just removing Business Contact Manager, unless you are using it. But – if you have CRM, why would you use BCM?

You can find the uninstaller for BCM in Add/Remove Programs.

Also note that if you are having issues with other Outlook add-ons, you may still have to evaluate them as well.

o Are you running CRM in an Internet Facing Deployment (IFD)? If so – have you had issues with remote users connecting to CRM via the Outlook client? Microsoft has a hot fix that addresses this issue as well. It is not available via Update Rollup1, but you can download it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951432 .

· Troubleshooting – Microsoft has developed several cool tools to help troubleshoot the CRM Outlook Client. With previous versions, you could get the Diagnostic Tool from Microsoft to create an output file that tells you about your computer (hot fixes, OS version, Office version, etc), and you could turn on client-side tracing. With CRM 4.0, they included this tool with the installation, and they added several other cool features:

o You can run a simple diagnostic, that will do a “health check” of your PC and environment

o You can turn off certain features while troubleshooting potential stability issues

§ Address Book Synchronization

§ C:\Users\’username’\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MSCRM\Traces for Windows Vista

o You can create an output file for Microsoft while troubleshooting – just like the 3.0 diagnostic tool did.

Here is a great link that describes using the CRM Client Diagnostic tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/crm/archive/2008/01/22/introducing-mscrm-client-diagnostics.aspx

· Deployment – Microsoft has improved the ability to deploy the CRM 4.0 client for larger environments. You can actually deploy it “silently” for most deployments, using something like SMS/System Center Configuration Manager or Altiris Software Delivery Solution. You will need to write your own deployment package, and obviously need to have expertise in whatever tool you use to deploy applications. But the Installation Guide has information on how to create silent installation packages and configuration files that you can deploy with your tool.

I don’t think deployment tools work well when trying to silently configure a CRM Online client, or any client you may deploy via IFD. This is because you need to provide your logon credentials during the configuration (Either your Active Directory credentials for On-Premise, or your Microsoft Live ID for CRM Online) – something your deployment tool cannot and should not be able to do for all end users in your environment.

Also of note for CRM Online deployments – depending on the environment you work in, you may need to allow certain URLs through your firewall that your end users don’t necessarily know about (more than your CRM Online organization URL). The following blog post explains this a bit more: http://blogs.inetium.com/blogs/tedh/archive/2008/10/03/microsoft-dynamics-crm-online-client-configuration-some-tidbits-of-information.aspx

So – I’m hoping this post provides you some sort of help, as you are deploying the CRM 4.0 Client for Outlook. This is a very powerful tool, if installed, configured and maintained correctly. The key here is end user experience. Without happy end users, you will not have a successful CRM deployment. Hopefully following these guidelines, as well as those spelled out in the Implementation Guide will get you there.

If you do not have the installation files for the CRM Client you can download them here:

· For On-Premise: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=60c4a6cc-59d7-416e-9f44-0ae8ff249768&displaylang=en

· For CRM Online: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8e6c81a-b7b2-4e57-8599-604967617396&displaylang=en

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=57c6267b-3b13-49dd-bfed-3cc83633aea7&displaylang=en

Some things to note:

1. Obviously, you'll want to back up your system and databases before you apply this rollup
2. Secondly, I recommend reading everything posted about the rollup - including fixes that must be manually applied, or require more steps be taken. Here is a good start:
     http://support.microsoft.com/Kb/952858
This link also lists which fixes are included in this rollup
3. Third, I highly recommend you apply Update Rollup 1 in a Development environment before you throw it in Production.
4. Microsoft is not recommending (or supporting) you import customizations in to a CRM 4.0 system where
     a. The source system has Update Rollup 1 applied, but the destination system does not
     b. The source system DOES NOT have Update Rollup 1 applied, but the destination system does
I've not attempted this myself. I know the import would fail in the 3.0 days - not sure if that is the case here? Just good to know and follow this advice
5. If you have customized your help files, you must back them up prior to applying this update
6. The update for Help files is not included in the update rollup. You can download the most current updates for Help files here:
     http://support.microsoft.com/Kb/KB955921
7. As with previous update rollups, there is a CRM Client update rollup to apply as well
8. There is also a CRM 4.0 Email Router update rollup to apply this time around
9. You do not need to apply the server and client fixes at the same time. I would recommend you apply them to both environments - but it's not like you MUST update the clients the moment you update the server, or vice-versa

Happy downloading!

Meet Anne Anderson

So - in the spirit of celebrating Inetium's 10 years, and everything that is great about the company, I thought I'd do a series of blog posts on each member of the Inetium CRM Team. You may know some ....many... all of us. But I just wanted to drop a couple sentences about each of my co-workers, to show how much I appreciate working with and knowing them.

I saved the best for last. Anne Anderson. While Jessica may be the friendliest one on the team - Anne is the KINDEST. She's always there to cheer you up. Always happy to see you. She knows her way around the CRM System, and can design a pretty kickin' system for you. Some of you know what I'm talkin' about! And Anne can write some mean documentation!

Anne has had a huge impact on how our CRM team interacts with each other and the direction we have gone over the past 2-3 years. She helped me personally a lot when I finally came over to this team from Infrastructure. I'm so glad I've been blessed to be on a team with her - and hope it continues for a long, long time!

So - that's it. I've written something about everyone on the CRM Team. Greatest Team at the greatest company! Thanks again to all of you!

Meet Bart Sneary

So - in the spirit of celebrating Inetium's 10 years, and everything that is great about the company, I thought I'd do a series of blog posts on each member of the Inetium CRM Team. You may know some ....many... all of us. But I just wanted to drop a couple sentences about each of my co-workers, to show how much I appreciate working with and knowing them.

Bart Sneary runs the show these days. He does a darn good job of it too. He leads by example, is never afraid to get his hands dirty, and ALWAYS looks at a situation with a "big picture" attitude.

If there was one thing I would complain about Bart - he walks too quietly. Startles me when he comes up all of the sudden. When he first started at Inetium, we were in our old 3600 building office. At the time, my back faced you while I was in my cube. He ALWAYS had me jumping out of my seat when he came up.

So - when we moved to the new office at 3500 (yeah - I know - real far move...), I opted for a desk that faces the masses. Somehow he STILL startles me most of the time! I swear he doesn’t walk, he glides!

But aside from that, Bart has been amazing to work with. Attention to detail, an ear to bend for any reason - and he makes us take and enjoy our time off! He's the great combination of supporting the employee and insuring the customer is taken care of. And a great mentor at that!

(Yes - reviews come up in a couple months. But that's not why I wrote it, I swear!)

I've known Dan now for - I don't know - four years? He's quickly become a great friend. He makes you slow down when talking to him. Not in words - "Hey, slow down". No - in his actions. In his relaxed attitude. In his ability to deactivate a stressful situation. This works for customers and us co-workers as well.

Dan never has anything bad to say about anything or anyone. Maybe, he would say he doesn't do enough for the customers, for us. That is not true - but he feels that way. Well Dan - enough already! ;) It's great to have you on our team buddy.

Josh Dean. Came to us fairly green in Data Engineering skills. But he had a pretty solid background with Microsoft Dynamics CRM, and reporting. Since he's come to Inetium he's proven himself several times over - be it successful deployments, migrations, integration projects, writing reports, keep the customer happy, passing exams - he's done it all, and he does it all.

Josh is a PYROMANIAC! Yep - just like the Def Leppard album, Josh likes to play with fire. And fireworks. And fire. He does some amazing firework shows - shows that look like you are at a Kiss concert! Ask him about it, if you get the chance.

I like Josh, because he's always even keel. Doesn't matter how stressful a project may get, he's always relaxed. Or maybe that's just his ruse? I don't know. But it works. Thanks Josh!

Meet Jim Duevel

So - in the spirit of celebrating Inetium's 10 years, and everything that is great about the company, I thought I'd do a series of blog posts on each member of the Inetium CRM Team. You may know some ....many... all of us. But I just wanted to drop a couple sentences about each of my co-workers, to show how much I appreciate working with and knowing them.

I'd like to talk a bit about another Data Engineer on our team, Jim Duevel. Jim came to the team a couple years ago, with a ton of experience with Microsoft CRM and Scribe. He's a rock star. 'Nuff said.

As opposed to Bill, who is the LOUDEST person on our team, Jim is probably the quietest. He's pretty laid back, just takes care of business. But get him involved in a softball game - you'll see him get a bit louder when he gets competitive! ;)

Jim's a family man - he loves to spend time with his wife and kids. Jim's a sports fanatic. Jim's just plain a cool guy! Jim's a talent we at Inetium are lucky to have on our team.

Meet Bill Goergen

So - in the spirit of celebrating Inetium's 10 years, and everything that is great about the company, I thought I'd do a series of blog posts on each member of the Inetium CRM Team. You may know some ....many... all of us. But I just wanted to drop a couple sentences about each of my co-workers, to show how much I appreciate working with and knowing them.

Bill Goergen. What do you want me to say? Get's up at 5 AM darned near every morning and runs. Makes us lazy people who like to sleep in look lazy......

Bill is the LOUDEST person I've ever met. No - not in normal one on one face to face conversation. But put him on a phone - I swear the person on the other line could put their receiver down, as they can hear him without even using the phone. And when he sneezes... I'm not kidding, he sneezed once, and a customer of MINE thought it was me in our conversation. And I think they spilled their drink a little, they were so startled.

In all seriousness, Bill is a great guy to work with. And he's tenacious! He will not give up on a problem, until he's found a solution. And he ALWAYS puts the customer first. And he's a riot! Ask him to tell you stories about raising his kids - he has something like a million. Maybe a million and a half. And each one leaves you in stitches.

Bill is also the other half of Inetium's own "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" - a moniker one of our clients gave us. They even put the Wild Stallyns logo in as their signature when they email us. Pretty good stuff! So is Bill.

So - I always give Jessica Noaeill guff about her name - she has so many vowels in it! As if I should talk, with my name....

It's pronounced 'knoll', I think, or 'noel'. I'll have to ask her again.

Jessica is hands down THE friendliest person I've ever met. She is always smiling, and always willing to stop whatever she is doing to answer even the most ridiculously stupid questions I or anyone else (mostly I) would throw her way. And she'll laugh at the dumbest jokes - which is cool, because I love her laugh, and I don't have any kind of joke BUT a dumb joke.

Jessica is a master at CRM data migrations, integrations, extragressions - pretty any kinda 'gression you can think of - using Scribe. She knows it's strengths and weaknesses, and how to make it do what you need it to do. Even if it can't do it - she can get it to do it. She pretty much rocks, that Jessica. You can trust that your project is in good hands when Jessica is part of the project team.

Meet Ilja Gregor

So - in the spirit of celebrating Inetium's 10 years, and everything that is great about the company, I thought I'd do a series of blog posts on each member of the Inetium CRM Team. You may know some ....many... all of us. But I just wanted to drop a couple sentences about each of my co-workers, to show how much I appreciate working with and knowing them.

Ilja came to Inetium around the same time as Dana. No - the same day. So they are like Inetium twins! Ilja's real name is Dennis - but he likes to go by Ilja, his middle name. I like Ilja better, personally. It fits him.

Ilja is probably the tallest person in Inetium CRM Land. And - he's got the greatest sense of humor that will ALWAYS take you off guard. He's a very "straight" person up front. Serious, professional, etc. But here are a couple examples of emails that came from Ilja recently:

Life Skill #1

In addition to learning Jscript and CRM functionality, we all need good life skills.

This is probably the most important thing you will learn today. Check it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN2gYHJNT3Y

Ilja

Life Skill #2

Ever been camping and you forgot your flashlight? Make your own: watch this video...

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/855279/mountain_dew_glows_mountain_dew_light_hack/

Just a couple examples of things he's shared with us over the last couple years.......
